Values
The fact that not everyone is created equal is a very acceptable notion to the Chinese. Formal authority is respected, and even if there is an abuse of power, there is little that can be done by the subordinate. It’s also considered strange to seek power or have aspirations beyond what’s already been determined for a person.
China is a very collectivist culture. This means that people tend to think of the good of the group as opposed to what’s best for themselves. It can seem somewhat clique-ish though, with people seeming cold or possibly even hostile to those not considered in their group.
China is a masculine society, meaning that it is very driven by success. It is not uncommon for a family member to sacrifice leisure or family time and choose to go to work instead. A service person, for example, will work until late in the night if a customer is in need of them; even if they didn’t have plans to do so.
The Chinese value adapting traditions and believe that the truth and/or “right thing to do” is dependent upon what the situation is. They also value saving money and being thrifty.
Overall, the Chinese are considered to be more cynical and pessimistic in their worldviews and do not feel it is right to overindulge in too much leisure time.
